Why visit Petra?
Petra is a breathtaking destination that enchants visitors with its rich history and stunning architecture. Once a thriving trade hub and the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, Petra offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity. Walking through the narrow, winding Siq leads to the iconic Treasury, a majestic façade that seems to glow at sunrise and sunset. Beyond the Treasury, visitors can explore ancient tombs, Roman theatre, and intricately carved temples. The Monastery, perched high above the city, rewards those who make the effort with expansie views. Petra’s timeless charm is enhanced by its desert surroundings and the hospitality of local Bedouins, making it a unique cultural and historical experience. Both while day or during a candlelit night tour, Petra is truly a wonder of the world worth discovering.
Be prepared:
We look forward to taking you to see one of the 7 wonders of the modern world – UNESCO listed Petra. The rock carved ‘Rose City’ will be a memory you will have for a lifetime and we want you to be prepared so you get the most out of your day in Petra.
#1 📸 Camera – this is the most important thing to make sure you will have some photos to remind you of this awe inspiring place)
#2 🥾 Comfortable Shoes – there are several kilometres of walking within the Protected Area and comfortable closed shoes are advisable
#3 🚰 Drink plenty of water – we will provide water but if you have an insulated drink bottle you should bring it so that you have cold water throughout the day
#4 🌞 Be sun smart – Hat, lightweight long sleeves, sunscreen etc. (weather can get very warm in the deserts of Jordan and much of the archeological site is unshaded, as such you should protect yourself from the sun and wear light weight long sleeve clothing and a hat)
#5 🧥Pack a jacket – early morning and late afternoon the temperature can significantly drop in the desert and it is useful to have a warm jacket with you
NOTE: Although there are no vehicles in the archeological site there are golf carts, horse drawn carts and donkeys that can be arranged, or a modified itinerary can be planned for visitors with limited mobility
What variations do we offer?
#1 Back entrance of Petra
The main route that the tour takes starts at the park entrance and follows an out and back route. The Monastery is the furthest point and it is a total of 8km walking. Although it is powerful experience to walk through the Siq and to visit the site in this way and we highly recommend it for active visitors. We offer a similar experience with reduced walking that enters through the back side of the archeological site and begins at the Monastery. If you would prefer this option please advise us accordingly. There is no additional cost for this change.
#2 Horse drawn cart or donkey
There are no vehicles permitted inside the archeological site however there are some transport options that reduce the walking for visitors.
There are golf carts that are the most comfortable option between the main entrance and the treasury and can carry up to 5 passengers to the treasury for a cost of JOD25.
There are horse drawn carts that travel between the main entrance and the treasury through the siq. These are bumpy rides but most visitors find them rewarding. This can be added to your itinerary for JOD20 per cart which carries up to 2 passengers.
After the Treasury and the nearby cluster with most of the main attractions, only donkeys are available as an alternative to walking to reach the Monastery. These are much less comfortable options over the rocky terrain but do offer a faster mode of transport for those who do not want to walk the 2.5km between the treasury and monetary but still want to see the entire site during their visit. This can be added to your itinerary for JOD10 per person.
#3 Reduced mobility circuit
For visitors who have reduced mobility or do not want to see the outlying locations and just see the main attractions and accessible locations we offer an itinerary with significantly reduced distance by foot. We utilize the golf carts to access the core part of the site from the main entrance and then importantly visit the treasury and other nearby sites. This change of itinerary does not incur additional cost but does require payment for the use of the golf cart option.
